Who Gets to Stay? Structural Barriers, Decolonisation and the Future of Belgian Animation

Abstract: Belgium has established itself as one of Europe’s leading centres for animation education, attracting talented students from across the world. Every year, international artists graduate from Belgian schools with remarkable creative potential and internationally recognised work. Yet only a small number are able to establish long term careers within the Belgian animation industry. This panel seeks to explore why.
Moving beyond discussions of representation on screen, the event examines the structural conditions that determine who can participate in the industry after graduation. Through a conversation between artists, educators, producers, cultural organisations and researchers, we aim to investigate how immigration policies, access to professional networks, language, funding structures, recruitment practices and institutional culture influence the careers of international and racialised animation professionals.
Rather than framing diversity solely as an issue of representation, the discussion approaches decolonisation as an ongoing process of questioning the structures that shape participation, opportunity and belonging within the Belgian animation landscap.
Bio: Hasan Pastaci is a Turkish multi-disciplinary artist and animation film director who recently got his master's degree from the School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium. Specializing in traditional hand-drawn animation, Hasan creates films that delve into themes of spirituality, consciousness, sexuality and the human psyche through a Jungian lens. His work is rich with symbolism and often carries profound political messages, reflecting his deep engagement with both personal and societal issues.
